Thong Khon, president of the National Olympic Committee of Cambodia (NOCC), has called on the committee’s leadership to prepare themselves to elevate Cambodia’s national sports profile on the international stage even further in the future.
He issued the instructions as he addressed the NOCC’s 2024 annual congress, held at the committee’s headquarters on March 27, to review the year’s achievements and set goals for 2025.
The meeting brought together key stakeholders from the sports sector to highlight past achievements and outline future objectives for Cambodia’s Olympic and national sports movements.
Khon emphasised the crucial role the NOCC has played in developing Cambodia’s sporting sector. He also acknowledged that the progress of each sport was due to the close collaboration between three key institutions: the NOCC, the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport and the national sports federations.
“To ensure successful management, leadership and implementation, we must foster a spirit of collective responsibility, cooperation and unity among these three key institutions, which serve as the foundation for the development of Cambodia’s sports potential,” he stated.
He commended their strong cooperation, noting that the commitment of these institutions has contributed to the success of both national and international sports competitions. This, he said, has brought pride to the nation and the Cambodian people.

However, he stressed that these achievements were dependent on peace, political stability, security and social order.
“Only with these conditions in place can we continue to create historic national sporting events in line with the motto ‘Sports Live in Peace’,” he said.
Khon urged all NOCC General Assembly members to prepare for even greater achievements in the coming years.
“Beyond celebrating the major accomplishments of 2024, I call on the General Assembly to prepare itself to continue raising Cambodia’s national sports profile on the international stage,” he added.
To achieve this, he called for a strong focus on the Kingdom’s participation in upcoming major sporting events, including this year’s 33rd Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Thailand and the 3rd Asian Youth Games in Bahrain in 2025.
Cambodia is set to host the 4th Asian Youth Games and the 6th Asian Youth Para Games in 2029. Thong Khon highlighted these as historic opportunities to further promote the Kingdom’s presence in the global Olympic and Paralympic movements.
He also urged the acceleration of efforts to improve the quality and efficiency of Cambodia’s sports sector, aligning it with the latest trends in sports science and technology.
In particular, he emphasised the importance of integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into sports management and development, in line with the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
In his concluding remarks, Khon expressed gratitude to all of the stakeholders in Cambodia’s Olympic and sports movement, particularly the government and local authorities, for their ongoing support and cooperation.
Their contributions, he said, have been instrumental in ensuring the smooth execution of sports-related activities and the continued success of the Kingdom’s sporting sector.
