Sao Sokha, president of the Football Federation of Cambodia (FFC), has shared that Cambodian football — especially the Cambodian Premier League (CPL) — is progressing well and will become a strong foundation for developing national teams at all levels to compete in international events.
He added that this growth in league structure follows strategic reforms introduced by the Cambodian Premier League Company, established in 2021.
In October 2023, the company restructured league operations to improve administrative and technical management systems, enhance match organisation, increase competition in line with FFC and AFC standards, and boost operational effectiveness toward long-term success and sustainability.
“The goal of establishing the Cambodian Premier League Company was to professionalise the league and enable Cambodian football to compete with other more developed football nations” explained Sokha.
“We firmly believe that this growth will serve as a strong foundation for national team development at all levels, enabling them to showcase their abilities in international events and achieve successful results,” he added.
He shared his comments as he addressed the CPL Honors Awards Ceremony, held on Monday, May 26. The awards celebrated the top performers of the 2024–2025 CPL. Svay Rieng FC retained their championship title, Phnom Penh Crown were runners-up, Visakha FC came in third, and Boeung Ket finished fourth and received the Fair Play award.

At the same ceremony, individual awards were also presented for best player, best coach, best refereeing team, best match venue, stadium with the largest crowd, fan favourite, best home host and the best eleven players of the season.
Sokha also highlighted Svay Rieng’s recent achievement as runners-up in the AFC Challenge League final, where they lost the final 2–1 to FK Arkadag of Turkmenistan on May 10 at the Morodok Techo National Stadium in Phnom Penh.
“Cambodian football has made remarkable progress. Just recently, Preah Khan Reach Svay Rieng created a historic moment for Cambodia by becoming runners-up in a third-tier continental tournament on May 10,” he said.
“This demonstrates the advancement and development of football in the Kingdom, reflecting the efforts and competitive strength of Cambodia’s professional league,” he added.
Koo Ja Hyeon (Peter Koo), CEO of the Cambodian Premier League Company, confirmed the league’s success this season.
“I thank everyone who participated in the 2024–2025 CPL. This year was a success. We did well and were strong. I hope next year will be even better,” he said.
