Several of the film’s set-builders are Cambodian-American deportees.
The Hip Hop Club, arguably Temple Town’s most popular night spot, has a new little sister, Classic Hip Hop, which opened on November 16 just round the corner.
Run by the same owners, the Lee Korng brothers, the new venue promises a more chilled out vibe.
Co-owner Lee Korng Vong, 29, says Classic Hip Hop has a slightly more laid-back, high-end feel. It has sofas rather than tables because, Vong says, “Some rich customers like it. Some people like busy and crowded, but some prefer just to sit, listen to music and drink with friends.”
Drinks prices will be the same at both clubs. Entrance is free and opening hours every night are from 8pm – 4am.
At the grand opening last Friday, famous singer Meas Sok Sophea performed to a rapt audience – different singers performed live for the next four nights.
In the future Vong may bring in more live music, but for now he is sticking with the tried and tested formula – DJs who play a little bit of everything, and the main DJ is his cousin.
Vong says, “We have a mix of all - hip hop, R&B, electro – everything to make people dance. We take old Khmer songs from the 70s, 80s, and remix them.
“We update all the music but some music is so popular – Pitbull’s ‘Rain over Me’, Gangnam Style – no choice! We have to play it. And we get a lot of tourists because we’re so close to the night market.”
The design is eye-catching – a square arch leading through to an angular, cube-like building lit up with purple lights with a faintly 60s feel.
Vong designed the building with his brother, as they have designed all their many businesses.
Vong lists his enterprises: “Golden Temple Villa, Golden Temple Hotel, Temple club, Cambodian Soup, Khmer Family, Pub St Food House, Khmer House Restaurant, Traditional Khmer Food Restaurant, Hip Hop and now under construction: our new project, KTV, a karaoke bar.”
