A driver transporting cassava tragically lost his life after his truck detonated an anti-tank mine on the afternoon of January 17.
The incident occurred in a cassava field in Battambang province’s Kon Phnum Khang Tbong village, in Sampov Loun district’s Ta Sda commune.
According to the Cambodian Mine Action Authority (CMAA) officials, the victim, identified as Thai Soeun, 42, sustained severe injuries to both legs and his head. He was rushed to Battambang Provincial Referral Hospital.
However, Heng Ratana, director-general of the Cambodian Mine Action Centre (CMAC), later confirmed that the victim had succumbed to his injuries.
This marks the second landmine incident of 2025. It follows the deaths of two CMAC deminers on January 16. The two men were killed while on duty clearing landmines in Trapeang Prasat district, Oddar Meanchey province.
Demining authorities have urged the public to avoid entering areas with unknown histories. It reminded members of the public that they are advised to consult local authorities before venturing into such areas and should avoid tampering with any mines or unexploded ordnance they encounter.
