The third wastewater treatment facility in Village IV, Commune IV, Sihanoukville, is nearly ready to start operations, with nearly 100 per cent of the construction completed. Preah Sihanouk provincial governor, Kuoch Chamroeun, anticipates the project, which cost an estimated $20 million, to wrap up by the end of July.
Chamroeun carried out an inspection of the ongoing work on the evening of July 11, accompanied by representative from X-Water Technology Co Ltd.
“Upon completion, the technical team will conduct tests in late July before we officially inaugurate the plant. This facility will be capable of treating 20,000 cubic metres of wastewater per day,” the representative revealed.
Chamroeun explained that the plant, funded by the government, is a collaborative effort between the provincial administration and the National Committee for Coastal Management and Development. The project aims to treat wastewater to environmental standards before discharging it into the sea.
The plant utilises the innovative Membrane Aerated Biofilm Reactor (MABR) technology, a cutting-edge aeration system known to enhance both energy efficiency and the overall capacity of the plant. This technology marks a significant advancement in aerobic wastewater treatment, boasting exceptional nutrient removal capabilities and superior energy efficiency in comparison to traditional wastewater treatment systems.
“This plant was constructed to mitigate waste and harmful substances that could potentially damage our environment, affecting humans, wildlife, plant life, biodiversity and the beaches of Preah Sihanouk province,” Chamroeun added.
According to the provincial administration, this plant is the third of its kind in the region. The first plant treats around 5,200 cubic metres of wastewater daily, serving Zone III, which spans 364 hectares in Commune III. The second plant caters to Zone IV, treating approximately 7,200 cubic metres of wastewater per day from an area of 486 hectares in Commune III. The first and second plants are already operational.
Additionally, the province has seven wastewater pumping stations, four constructed by the National Committee for Coastal Management and Development and three by the Ministry of Public Works and Transport. These stations channel wastewater to a 16-hectare sewage treatment station in Sihanoukville.
