As the Earth tilts and the sun aligns perfectly with the grandeur of Angkor Wat’s central tower, the most iconic temple in Cambodia offers an awe-inspiring spectacle that draws visitors from across the globe.
This natural phenomenon, known as Equinox Angkor, marks the seasonal shift and demonstrates the ingenuity of Khmer architecture and its deep connection to the cosmos.
“The Equinox Angkor is a special solar phenomenon that occurs twice a year at Angkor Wat. The first, called the vernal, or spring, equinox, can occur March 21 to 23 from 5am to 6.30am,” announced the Ministry of Tourism.
The autumn equinox takes place between September 21 and 23.
The ministry described the phenomenon as highlighting not only the brilliance of the temple’s design but also the ingenuity of the Khmer people, whose beliefs and understanding of the cosmos guided their construction of Angkor Wat.
During both events, the sun rises directly in line with the temple's central tower, creating a breathtaking display of symmetry between architecture and nature.

The ministry attributed this celestial marvel to the ancient Khmer people's advanced understanding of astronomy, architecture and celestial movements.
“It is a rare and awe-inspiring event,” says Long Kosal, spokesman for the APSARA National Authority.
“The morning of the equinox attracts thousands of people, not only to witness a beautiful sunrise but to understand the celestial significance of this moment. It’s a blend of cultural heritage, architecture and nature coming together in perfect harmony,” he said.
Last year’s events saw record-breaking attendance.
On March 22 alone, the number swelled as nearly 12,000, more than 2,600 of them foreign, converged on the site, eager to witness the magical alignment of the sun and the temple.
The second phenomenon, occurring from September 21-23, drew a total of 38,236 tourists, with 36,200 national and 2,036 international visitors.
Despite unfavorable weather conditions in September 2023, the dawn atmosphere was electric with anticipation.

As the gates of Spean Hal opened, visitors from all corners of the globe, including seasoned travelers, photographers and families, streamed through the ancient walkway toward the temple.
The horizon began to glow with the first light of the day, transforming the silhouette of Angkor Wat into a stunning, otherworldly scene.
Cameras clicked and videos rolled as the moment was immortalised, marking the perfect balance of day and night, of light and dark.
The event serves as a powerful reminder of Cambodia’s rich cultural heritage and its continuing allure as a world-class tourist destination.
As the sun rises higher, illuminating the majestic temple and casting long shadows on the ancient stones, the moment of balance between night and day leaves a lasting impression on all who are present.
