To promote sustainable tourism in Siem Reap province, tourism operators need to develop new products, said Kao Philip, president of the Siem Reap Tourism Club Association. He also urged better connectivity with the province’s new international airport.
During a May 27 meeting with the press, Philip described how tourism products, like humans, are constantly evolving and need to offer new and different experiences. He explained that tourism operators must innovate and create experiences that will capture the interest of visitors, increase tourist numbers and encourage longer stays.
“In the past, visitors to Siem Reap stayed for 2 or 3 nights. We can extend this to 3 to 5 nights. For example, areas like Phnom Kulen and Kampong Phluk have not yet been developed to allow tourists to stay for a full day or overnight. They visit briefly and leave, but the potential there is compelling. We need to develop these areas to encourage tourists to spend more time.”
Philip met with domestic and international media representatives from more than ten outlets. They are exploring Siem Reap and experiencing its rich cultural heritage and ancient temples during a 3-night, 4-day trip, from May 27 to May 30.
Additionally, he noted that further infrastructure development will be a key factor in boosting the growth of the industry.
“During the Covid-19 period, the government developed 38 roads, and many returning tourists have praised this, as it provides convenience and reduces safety concerns,” he said.
“We are also aware that the government needs to further develop the infrastructure which connects the new airport. This is an urgent need. This will facilitate travel to and from Siem Reap and the airport, making it particularly attractive for air travellers,” he added.
According to the Siem Reap Provincial Tourism Department, in the first three months of 2025, Siem Reap welcomed approximately 806,631 tourists, a 14.16% decrease compared to the same period last year, when 939,734 visitors arrived. Of the total, 408,100 were domestic tourists, and 398,531 were international tourists.
