Fixed-duration contracts (FDCs) are in the sights of Cambodian Confederation of Unions president Rong Chhun, who yesterday urged Prime Minister Hun Sen to outlaw their use in the garment and footwear industries.
Chhun said the cancellation of such contracts would provide better conditions and job security across the two industries.
“I want the prime minister to distribute a circular letter,” he said.
In a speech on December 12, the prime minister said many workers wanted permanent employment rather than FDCs and urged employers to improve conditions relating to contracts.
Companies can place workers on fixed-duration contracts of up to six months each for no longer than two years.
Unions say FDCs rob workers of benefits and security, while employers argue they are necessary to attract those who also do seasonal agricultural work.
Chhun said employers often “sacked” known strikers when their short-term contracts finished.
“I think the garment and shoe industries must be made to stop using these altogether,” he said.
