At least 26 people died in the 30 serious traffic accidents that were recorded during the three-day celebration of the Traditional Khmer New Year, The National Police’s Department of Traffic Police and Public Order reported that 5 of the 26 fatalities were women.
In addition, 47 people were injured, some seriously.
April 16, the final day of the national celebrations, saw the highest number of road deaths, with a total of 12 people killed. On April 15, there were 9 deaths, and on April 14, there were 5.
The police attributed excessive speed as the leading contributor to the accidents, citing it as the cause of 13 of the 30 recorded incidents.
