The Ministry of Public Works and Transport said that it has digitised over 300 of its key services to ensure quick and hassle-free public support.
Ministry spokesperson Heang Sotheayuth made the announcement during the Cambodia-International Digital Government and Digital Technology Expo, held at Koh Pich Convention and Exhibition Centre in Phnom Penh on March 11.
“The [ministry] offers roughly 500 different types of services. Currently, about 300 of these are accessible via more than 10 digital systems, forming part of our process management flow. We aim to digitise over 200 additional services in 2024, achieving 100 per cent digitalisation,” he stated.
Sotheayuth noted that the ministry has collaborated with over 10 banking and financial institutions to provide online payment facilitation.
“The ministry plans to introduce a new major service. This will occur after we receive approval from the head of government. Following this, we’ll make a public announcement. I believe that the people will appreciate the new [support system] that the ministry plans to launch,” he highlighted.
Sotheayuth explained that the government’s policy has motivated public sector technology experts. He said the plan encourages them to build on existing achievements and to actively pursue research into new technologies that align with societal needs.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the first Digital Government Forum, Minister of Post and Telecommunications Chea Vandeth highlighted that the ministry leads the Digital Government Committee, overseeing the development and transformation of online government.
He said the group, comprising representatives from all ministries and institutions, ensures a comprehensive approach.
Vandeth noted that in the realm of digital government, the ministry concentrates on four key areas: people, mechanisms, technology and data.
“The telecoms ministry is dedicated to advancing recent achievements in digital technology. This commitment supports the government’s first phase of the Pentagonal Strategy and the Digital Economic and Social Policy Framework 2021-35. Our aim is to help realise the government’s vision of elevating Cambodia to upper-middle-income status by 2030 and high-income by 2050,” he stated.
He said that over the past year, the ministry has successfully developed and launched the verify.gov.kh platform, an important step in the digital government initiative.
According to the ministry, the system simplifies the verification process as users can authenticate documents issued by the relevant authority by scanning a QR code, eliminating the need for original paper records.
“The platform is highly sought after due to its ease of use, robust data security and cost-effectiveness. This innovation has elevated Cambodia’s international standing, evidenced by the platform winning gold medals at the ASEAN Digital Awards. Its success has garnered interest from numerous countries in the region, keen on adopting this Cambodian-developed platform within their own and ASEAN frameworks,” it said.
