Land Management Minister Chea Sophara yesterday cleared up confusion over the name of Ochheuteal Beach after an image he posted on Facebook referring to it as Samdech Techo Hun Sen beach.
The image was one of a series of digital mock-ups for planned improvements to beaches in Preah Sihanouk province.
Sophara yesterday attributed the misnomer to an overly patriotic architect and said there were in fact no plans to rename any of the beaches.
Provincial Governor Yun Min also confirmed beaches scheduled for development are to retain their original names.
Independent analyst Meas Ny said yesterday that while there is nothing wrong with naming roads or infrastructure after notable people, doing so too often can cause places to lose their identity.
The premier’s son Hun Manith, meanwhile, expressed relief on Facebook that it was “just a rumour”.
