The Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology called on all provinces to be vigilant of rising temperatures and high winds, while some provincial authorities have issued heat wave warnings.
According to the ministry’s April 18 announcement, from April 19 to 25, temperatures may soar as high as 40 degrees, with moderate rains, high wind and thunderstorms forecast for the central lowlands, highlands and coastal areas.
“Due to continuing low to moderate low pressure valleys, combined with fluctuating winds, the central lowlands and highlands my experience temperatures up to 40 degrees,” said the ministry.
“Coastal areas are likely to experience highs of 35 degrees, with storms and high winds,” it added.
The ministry called on the public to be mindful of natural phenomena like thunder, lightning, high winds and possible sudden temperature changes.
Stung Treng provincial administration spokesman Men Kong said local authorities have shared the warnings throughout the province.
“We are familiar with these conditions, so we are able to prepare our people for them,” he added.
“Temperatures are already high, so we are being careful to let people know they should expect additional heat waves. So far we have not recorded any serious heat related cases, but we will continue to monitor the situation. Provincial health clinics and centres have been advised to be on alert,” he concluded.
Kampong Speu provincial governor Vei Samnang had advised local authorities at all levels to pay close attention in helping people who were affected by the severe weather patterns.
He noted that he had especially urged the public to pay attention to vulnerable people such as children and the elderly.
“Kampong Speu is not as susceptible to heat waves as some other provinces, as we have an adequate supply of water,” he concluded.
