The Ministry of Health has mandated mask wearing and social distancing in Svay Rieng province after many Covid-19 cases were detected there.

“Svay Rieng is designated an area with high risk of transmission linked to the February 20 community outbreak,” health minister Mam Bun Heng said in a directive dated April 14, effective immediately.

The ministry told relevant authorities to strictly enforce the directive.

As of April 14, Svay Rieng had recorded a total of 216 cases, 164 of them active. The province ranked fourth in terms of the number of transmission cases after Phnom Penh, Preah Sihanouk and Kandal, according to the health ministry.

Svay Rieng now joins Phnom Penh, Kandal, Preah Sihanouk, Prey Veng and Siem Reap where mask wearing and social distancing are a must.

According to a sub-decree released recently, those caught not wearing a mask in public faces a fine of between 200,000 and one million riel ($50 and $250).
