The Ministry of Labour is continuing to urge the relevant authorities and the Ministry of Public Works and transport to conduct regular inspections of the large vehicles which are used to transport factory workers, as well as their drivers, in order to reduce traffic accidents and keep workers safe.

Traffic accidents involving heavy transport vehicles remain a major concern for the ministry, with labour minister Heng Sour previously announcing measures that would ensure factory worker transportation is safe and comfortable.

Sun Mesa, ministry spokesperson, said on June 10 that the ministry has focused on improving worker transport vehicles by transitioning from caged or modified vehicles trucks to those with proper seating. As a result, most vehicles have been replaced with buses. He noted that some flatbed or cage trucks continue to be used to carry commuting workers.

He added that most traffic accidents involving worker transport vehicles are caused by mechanical issues or poor driver behaviour. He urged the authorities and the transport ministry to address these issues.

“Based on police reports, the majority of these accidents are due to problems with the vehicle or the skills and judgement of the driver. This includes competitive driving, disregard for traffic laws, road usage behaviour and, to a lesser extent, drunk driving, which are the leading causes of worker fatalities,” he said.

He called on all drivers to enhance their professionalism, exercise high caution, and ensure their vehicles are inspected regularly to avoid traffic accidents.
