King Norodom Sihamoni has emphasised the essential role of Buddhist pagodas in Khmer society, noting their inseparable connection to the daily lives of the people and the development of the nation.

The King shared his remarks during the royal inauguration ceremony of the Grand Residence of Supreme Patriarch Chuon Nath, as well as the Khmer Manuscript Research and Preservation Institute, at Wat Ounalom on the morning of February 17.

He noted that pagodas serve as centres for cultivating the teachings of the Buddha and have played a significant role in the preservation of the Khmer language through the lifelong dedication of Supreme Patriarch Chuon Nath, who made immense contributions to the creation of the Khmer dictionary.

His Majesty added that temples are an inseparable part of Khmer daily life and national development, making them a fundamental pillar of both religion and society.

From ancient times to the present, Khmer Buddhist temples have made significant contributions to society by promoting morality and ethics, which are core elements of Buddhist teachings, fostering harmony between religion and social life.

Temples have also served as centres of education – both spiritually and intellectually – helping to build human resources equipped with knowledge in various fields.

“Khmer Buddhist temples are repositories of cultural heritage, traditions and invaluable knowledge that serve as an endless source of study and research. They are vital institutions for preserving and transmitting national identity and spiritual heritage, from ancient times to the present,” His Majesty added.

Temples also provide shelter and education for underprivileged individuals, some of whom later rise to leadership positions and serve the nation.

Additionally, His Majesty praised Cambodian leaders, including Senate President Hun Sen, for revitalising Buddhism and ensuring the preservation of Khmer temples and their continued spiritual significance.

The King also acknowledged several of the policies of the government under Prime Minister Hun Manet, which have contributed to societal progress and stability.

Most notably, he reiterated that no individual should ever disrespect or undermine Buddhism.
