At least 10 fires occurred across Cambodia during the three-day Khmer New Year celebrations from April 14 to 16. Four people were reportedly injured, although no lives were lost, according to an April 17 statement from the National Police’s Fire Prevention, Extinguishing and Rescue Department.

The same three-day period last year saw double the number of fires.

The 10 fires destroyed a total of 20 homes, two storerooms, one warehouse, three vehicles and a restaurant.

Five of the incidents were attributed to electrical malfunction, while one was the result of a gas leak and one was started by a forest fire. The authorities are continuing to determine the causes of the remaining fires.

Phnom Penh had the highest number of incidents with four cases, followed by Siem Reap province with two, Ratanakkiri with two, Mondulkiri with one and Kampong Speu with one.
