Kep province has been selected as the first site of a new coastal development initiative, with a “world-class” 2.7km beach planned for the near future.
The Kep Provincial Administration met with the National Committee for Coastal Management and Development to discuss the development of the Kingdom’s four coastal provinces.
Kep governor Som Piseth on November 8 said discussions with a delegation from the national committee focused on a join development plan for Preah Sihanouk, Kampot, Koh Kong and Kep provinces.
Following the meeting, it was agreed that the committee would begin examining plans to develop the beach in Kep first, noting the gradual progression of the province, including its islands and Angkol beach.

Piseth explained that in addition to supporting the development of these beaches, the committee has also selected 2.7km of beach in Kep, which has just been filled, for development into a “world class” beach.
“The purpose of the development of our coastal area is to attract tourists, encourage and support private sector tourism investment, and ensure sustainable development,” he said.
He added that while the new beach will attract international tourists, the plan aims to attract domestic visitors as well.
He noted, however, that the goal was not to vie with the other coastal provinces, but to compete with other countries.
Piseth did not reveal when the work would begin, as extensive studies were still to be carried out, but noted that the final plan would integrate infrastructure such as sidewalks and bike lanes along the beach, as well as a comprehensive waste management programme to ensure hygiene.
Cambodia Association of Travel Agents (CATA) president Chhay Sivlin lauded the initiative as excellent news for Kep, as well as Cambodia as a whole, explaining that the province attracts both domestic and international tourists.
“If we can transform it into a world-class coastal region, it will contribute to an increase in the numbers of domestic and foreign guests. This will contribute to the economy as Kep business owners will be able to expand operations,” she said.
She noted Kep’s potential, thanks to its combination of sea and mountains, and especially its delectable seafood.
Kep is set to host round three of the 10th Sea Festival, held under the theme “Together for Tourism”, from December 1-3.
