The Ministry of Industry, Science, Technology and Innovation on May 20 observed World Metrology Day – the theme of which is “Metrology in the Digital Era” this year – reflecting on the raft of major transformations brought by digital technologies that local communities have undergone.

“Metrology” is the branch of science that deals with measurements, including all theoretical and practical aspects. World Metrology Day marks the anniversary of the signing of the Metre Convention in Paris in 1875 by 17 countries.

The convention sets the framework for global collaboration in the science of measurement and in its industrial, commercial and societal applications. The original aim of the convention – the worldwide uniformity of measurement – remains as important today as it was in 1875.

The ministry said the National Metrology Centre celebrates this day to raise awareness of the importance and role of metrology in the digital era, as well as its bearing on quality-of-life improvements and the development of resolutions to issues related to safety, commerce, science and technology.

The ministry underscored that the world has shifted its focus towards the metrology sector, a trend which it credited to the vital role it plays in people’s livelihoods and daily routines, as a support for healthcare and wellbeing in a modern society, production, commerce, consumer protection, and technical regulations.

According to the ministry, Cambodia is a member state of the International Organisation of Legal Metrology, the Asia-Pacific Legal Metrology Forum, the Asia Pacific Metrology Programme, the ASEAN Consultative Committee for Standards and Quality on Working Group 3 and the International Bureau of Weights and Measures.

It said the theme ‘Metrology in the Digital Era’ was chosen because digital technology is revolutionising the community and is one of the most exciting trends in society today.

“Indeed more widely metrology, the science of measurement, plays a central role in scientific discovery and innovation, industrial manufacturing and international trade, and in improving the quality of life and protecting the global environment,” it said.
