Former Prime Minister Hun Sen is en route to Tokyo, Japan, where he will be fitted with a new prosthetic eye.
In a January 9 social media post, he noted that he has been using the same Japanese product for the past 34 years.
During his trip, he will receive five more prosthetics.
He explained that the Japanese-made products are far more comfortable than the ones he originally wore.
“For 34 years I have been using prosthetics which are produced in Japan, and they have never given me any pain or caused headaches. They are very different from the one I wore from 1975 to 1990, which caused me pain and gave me frequent headaches,” he said.
Hun Sen lost his eye when he was wounded by shrapnel while fighting alongside the Khmer Rouge, the day before Phnom Penh fell in April 1975. He answered the call to arms issued by then-Prince Norodom Sihanouk, who was ousted by Marshall Lon Nol in a military coup in 1970.
