Five people were killed at the scene when a van overturned on the Phnom Penh-Sihanoukville Expressway this morning. Two others were rushed to hospital in serious condition.
The accident took place in Kampong Speu province’s Samrong Tong district.
Kampong Speu provincial police announced that the accident occurred shortly after 7am. They reported that the Toyota Alphard, driven by a woman, was on its way to Preah Sihanouk province.
Police released images which showed that the vehicle had come to a halt on its roof, but did not say what had caused the accident, or whether another vehicle was involved.
Kampong Speu provincial governor Vei Samnang shared his condolences to the victims of the accident via social media, along with images of the accident.
He had a stern warning for all drivers.
“Please, it is imperative that drivers remain vigilant. They should be only overtake when it is safe to do so and must respect the speed limits. Additionally, nobody should get behind the wheel if they are fatigued, or have consumed alcohol,” he said.
