Minister of Social Affairs, Veterans and Youth Rehabilitation Chea Somethy highlighted the vital contributions of the elderly in shaping families, communities, education, knowledge, traditions, culture, and religion, as Cambodia observes the 25th anniversary of the International Day of Older Persons.

Celebrated on October 2, this year’s theme was “Helping Older Persons Helps Us All”.

“We recognise that senior citizens have been fundamental in building the foundations of our society and culture.” Somethy said, adding that Cambodia’s rich cultural traditions are deeply intertwined with the wisdom and conscientiousness of its older generation.

The minister also urged authorities at all levels and all relevant parties to pay greater attention to elderly care. This would involve devising a structured management system to ensure comprehensive services for the ageing population.

The ministry noted it has established 1,646 senior citizen associations across various communes in the capital in 2018. These were aimed at providing support in challenging times.

In collaboration with the NGO HelpAge Cambodia and the UN Development Programme (UNDP), the ministry has recently initiated new model elderly associations (inter-generational and multifunctional) in the capital and eight provinces including Prey Veng, Svay Rieng, Tbong Khmum, Kampong Thom, Siem Reap, Banteay Meanchey, Preah Vihear and Battambang.

Chhort Bunthong, head of the Culture, Education and Tourist Relations Department at the Royal Academy of Cambodia, highlighted the importance of the administration’s attention to the aged. He said they are valuable contributors who have immensely benefitted the nation.

He expressed gratitude towards the elderly for their services to society, the nation and the government, while also praising the current mandate’s care for them and expressing hope that such support would be sustained throughout their lives.

“It’s essential that the government not only commemorates this day but also reviews existing policies to ensure the well-being, health and dignity of our older generation who have significantly contributed through tax payments and national service,” he added.

Prime Minister Hun Manet also extended his greetings on the Day of Older Persons, calling upon all ministries, institutions and authorities to amplify their efforts and provide the necessary support to enhance the well-being of the elderly.
