The Cambodian Mine Action Authority (CMAA) and representatives of the Chinese embassy announced the launch of the “Mekong-Lancang Cooperation in Mine Action” project on June 17, with over $430,000 of funding.

Ly Thuch, CMAA first vice-president, stated that this partnership is not merely about providing support and cooperation but also reflects a commitment to achieving a shared destiny. He emphasised that China’s support is not only about the scope of aid but also a strategic vision and commitment.

He noted that Sino-Cambodian cooperation in mine action goes beyond clearing mines and supporting humanitarian efforts; it paves the way for a future of shared prosperity, peace and long-lasting friendship.

According to Thuch, the project has two main objectives: transforming land affected by explosive remnants of war (ERWs) into safe land to contribute to development, and facilitating the exchange of expertise, knowledge and techniques among countries affected by explosive remnants, particularly those in the Mekong-Lancang region.

Lang Kosal, CMAA spokesperson, explained that the “Mekong-Lancang Cooperation in Mine Action” project will benefit 723 families by clearing land contaminated with explosive remnants in three target districts of Svay Rieng province.

He added that China has been supporting mine clearance since 2018, with total aid amounting to over $14 million to date. This includes financial assistance, modern equipment and essential training, which have transformed mine-contaminated land into safe areas for communities.

Through this $14 million in aid, approximately 150 square kilometres of land have been cleared, benefiting around 2.5 million people directly. Numerous mines and explosive remnants have been detected and destroyed, while about 1.5 million people have received education on mine risks.
