Prime Minister Hun Manet announced that Cambodia will independently secure its electricity and internet supplies along the borders in response to reported threats from “extremist groups” in Thailand to disrupt these services.

The decision comes amid ongoing border disputes between the two nations, which have fueled tensions and prompted widespread discussions on social media.

In a statement addressing the issue tonight, June 12, Manet emphasized Cambodia’s resolve to avoid dependency on external supplies and mitigate potential complications arising from the threats.

“To prevent any challenges for the Thai side in deciding whether or when to cut off supplies, Cambodia has decided to ensure its own electricity and internet provisions,” he said.

“Chea Vandeth, Minister of Posts and Telecommunications, confirmed that, effective 12am tonight, all Cambodian optical cable network companies and internet operators will cease purchasing internet bandwidth from Thailand. We have sufficient capacity to provide internet services independently,” Manet said.

Similarly, Keo Rattanak, Minister of Mines and Energy on June 11 affirmed Cambodia’s ability to meet its domestic electricity demands without reliance on external sources.

Manet further directed all relevant Cambodian ministries and institutions to conduct thorough reviews and establish contingency measures to address any additional threats to critical supplies.

“We are preparing to implement further actions if other disruptions are threatened,” he stated. See less
