Prime Minister Hun Sen on April 7 reiterated a call for people to do their part to minimise numbers of traffic accident-related injuries and deaths nationwide, according to a statement from the Council of Ministers – or Cabinet.

Chairing a plenary session of the council, the premier also advised authorities to raise awareness of road traffic laws, especially through public events, and implement “safe village-commune” policy.

The session approved a National Plan for the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030 – an adaptation of a UN initiative, and the second of its kind after the 2011-2020 edition.

The World Health Organisation has said that the global Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020 was designed to save “millions” of lives, by improving vehicle and road infrastructure safety as well as road behaviour and safety management.

The statement noted that the national plan – organised into seven sections and three annexes – aims to increase the efficiency of road traffic law implementation, as well as reduce numbers of traffic accident-related injuries and deaths by 50 per cent by 2030.
