Ly Chantola, president of the Bar Association of the Kingdom of Cambodia (BAKC), led a 30-member delegation to attend the annual conference of the Law Association for Asia and the Pacific (LAWASIA) in Sydney, Australia, to exchange views and experiences as well as build relationships and cooperation in the field of law.
The 35th conference, held from November 18-21, was chaired by LAWASIA president Melissa K Pang and attended by its executive committee members as well as members from about 40 countries in the Asia-Pacific region.
Chantola spoke at a meeting between the BAKC delegation and Pang about a project to amend the Law on Attorneys in Cambodia and highlighted the association’s purpose and its eagerness to expand cooperation with LAWASIA.
“We discussed cooperation focused on joint workshops and management skills in the legal profession in order to disseminate legal and skills training to all Cambodian lawyers,” he said.
Pang praised the cooperation between the association and LAWASIA, saying she was interested in learning more about the legal aid system in Cambodia. She also expressed support and pledged future cooperation with the association.
Speaking from the conference, Chantola told The Post that the LAWASIA annual event was really important for BAKC members as a learning opportunity that would provide them with new ideas and information.
“We have benefited a lot from the LAWASIA annual conference in Cambodia by helping to improve the image of our association through active participation on the international stage.
“I have worked with the president and vice-president of LAWASIA to strengthen our relationship and cooperation and conducted meetings with bar associations from other countries such as South Korea, India, Singapore and Australia.
“We have invited skilled lawyers and judges to share experiences on important topics such as civil law, commercial law, human rights and the rule of law. Our lawyers have listened to these speakers and also shared our opinions and views,” he said.
Chantola said the BAKC previously hosted the LAWASIA conference in 2018 in Siem Reap town.
LAWASIA consists of the Asia-Pacific Bar Association, which includes the bar associations and lawyers, judges and legal professionals from about 40 member countries.
The conference is the platform for bar associations and legal professionals from around the Asia-Pacific to meet and discuss legal issues and progress in the region, including law enforcement, legal education, international business laws, investment laws and dispute resolution mechanisms.
