Preah Monivong High School, located in Battambang province, was officially bestowed with the Label France Education quality mark on March 19.

The award is a quality mark for French-speaking bilingual education abroad, and is granted by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Earned in association with the Cambodian Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport, this means the school has been recognised as a public general education institution with international standard quality education in Khmer-French language.

A ceremony, held to mark the award, was presided over by education minister Hang Chuon Naron and Elodie Vialis, representative of the French embassy in Phnom Penh, on March 19, said the education ministry.

“The Label French Education programme currently has a total of 651 full-fledged member institutions and 190,000 students within its framework, in 63 countries around the world,” it said.

According to the ministry, Preah Monivong High School is one of the leading public general education institutions in Cambodia, and delivers a French-Khmer bilingual curriculum.

It said the cooperation between the school and the embassy reflects the spirit of improving the quality of French language education in Cambodia.

The technical team in charge of the French section of the school made great efforts to ensure the school completed the application process, which began in 2017. The official recognition was announced in September last year.

Chuon Naron explained that the award is an opportunity for all of the school’s teachers and students access a wide range of learning resources, as well as a chance to participate in several projects staged by partner organisations.

Kong Samneang, head of the Federation of Education Services in Cambodia, congratulated the school for the successful results of its assessment, noting that the official recognition will contribute to improving the quality of language education it provides.

“The awarding of the Label France award also provides an opportunity to promote cooperation in the field of bilateral education between the two nations,” he said.

The ministry described the school as a historic one, noting that its special qualities include its efforts to reduce the rate of dropouts and increase student achievement each year.
