The National Election Committee (NEC) has been sending out invitations to people whose names were on the 2020 voter list so that they can check and verify them on the 2021 voter list from October 12 to November 30.
NEC vice-chairman Nuth Sokhom said at a meeting with stakeholders on September 22 that invitations will be sent out until October 11 with the aim of informing people whose names are on the 2020 voter list to check them in communes where they live.
As of September 22, NEC had sent out 5,355,902 invitations, or about 60.65 per cent of the total it had printed. The invitations have been delivered by the municipal and provincial election secretariats in cooperation with commune authorities and village chiefs.
“People who have names on the formal 2020 voter list and used a valid Cambodia ID card in a past election registration can verify their names and data on the voter list. If they see it is recorded incorrectly from their ID cards, they have to request for it to be corrected,” he said.

Sokhom continued that for people who become eligible to vote and had previously not yet registered to vote, they can register from September 30 to October 12 at the commune hall or the place where they live in order to be eligible to cast a ballot in the 2022 commune council elections.
NEC secretary-general Tep Nytha said the NEC had faced several challenges, such as Covid-19 and floods. NEC had encountered such problems in 46 communes in seven provinces – Banteay Meanchey, Kampong Cham, Kampong Chhnang, Siem Reap, Takeo, Oddar Meanchey and Tbong Khmum.
“The check of the voter list and voter registration in 2021 is to make a formal voter list for the forthcoming 5th mandate commune council elections scheduled for June 5, 2022. So, the NEC must validate and post this formal voter list at least 90 days before the poll,” he said.
According to the NEC, a total of 10,867,961 people aged 18 and older have registered and are eligible to vote, including 1,635,990 new registrations. Also, a total of 83,043 names had been deleted from the voter list. The coming commune council elections will have a total of 23,611 voting booths across the country.
