Students from Preah Beda Ekreach High School in Kampong Speu’s Kong Pisei district visited the capital’s Tuol Sleng Genocide Centre and Win-Win Monument to better understand the history of the Khmer Rouge regime.

The trip, for 150 students, was organised by the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) on August 10. The ECCC explained that an understanding of history would help prevent the violent recurrence of such a regime.

At Tuol Sleng, on-site guides explained the tragic events that occurred there. ECCC public affairs officials also explained the link between the crimes to the trials of those who were responsible. They also briefed them on the remaining work that ECCC needs to complete before its closure.

At the Win-Win monument, they learned about Prime Minister Hun Sen’s journey to topple the Khmer Rouge, and how the Kingdom achieved peace.

According to the ECCC, similar field trips are organised on a weekly basis for students and the public, with the aim of preventing the recurrence of such a regime.

According to the ECCC, since 2009, more than 600,000 people have attended these trips.
