In a remarkable achievement for Cambodian cuisine, SAOY - Royal Cambodian Home Cuisine by Chef Nak has been honoured with the prestigious Best of the Best award in the Books Publishers (B02) category at the 29th Gourmand World Cookbook Awards.

The event, celebrating the finest in culinary literature, was held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, from November 27-29.

"SAOY", created by Chef Nak and her team, was also nominated for its creativity and passion in categories including Asian-Books (Countries and Regions C08) and Heads of State (Gastrodiplomacy G05), showcasing the rich and diverse flavours of Cambodian cuisine.

Upon receiving the award, an elated Chef Nak expressed her joy and pride to The Post, stating, "We made it! Best of the best cookbook in the world 2023!!!".

"I never imagined winning prizes when I started this project three years ago. Working with a few friends who value cuisine, art and culture was my goal. Being recognised by the Gourmand Awards is far above my expectations. It's a reminder that even the simple joy of food deserves to be celebrated," said Sot Serey, designer and illustrator for the project.

La Mo, a photographer involved in the book’s production, expressed pride in the team's achievements.

"As an artist and photographer, I take immense pride in our team. It brings me great pleasure to share the remarkable success of the book with our nation. The endeavour has truly been a labour of love," he said.

"SAOY" offers more than recipes; it's a vibrant celebration of Cambodian heritage, encapsulating culinary knowledge passed down through generations. Much of its content is interpreted from the recipes of Princess Norodom Rasmi Sobbhana between 1950 and 1970, offering readers a sensory journey into the heart of Khmer cuisine.

"This is another exciting moment for Cambodian cuisine and culture. A talented and driven group of artists dedicated to showcasing the depth of Cambodian cultural heritage created this stunning work of art," said Charley Todd, board president of Cambodian Living Arts.

Representing Cambodia, Chef Nak showcased the pinnacle of the country’s culinary artistry at the awards ceremony, part of the Saudi Feast Food Festival.

Hun Many, president of the Union of Youth Federations of Cambodia (UYFC), supported the team's presence in Riyadh.

"I am glad that the UYFC and I are able to contribute in however small a capacity toward their overall success," he stated.

Chef Nak envisions a future where Cambodian cuisine is globally renowned.

"We broaden our passion for culinary art through unique services, which we offer in addition to publishing cookbooks and creating engaging social media content to preserve and promote the rich tapestry of Cambodian cuisines. Luxury home dining experiences, private cooking classes, luxurious homestays and restaurant consultancy are among them," she said.
