Businessmen and economists have shared their belief that the upcoming Angkor Sankranta event, to be held in Siem Reap province during the Khmer New Year festival, will bring significant positive impacts to Cambodia’s economic growth and the tourism sector.
This year’s event will mark the first time that Prime Minister Hun Manet officiates the opening ceremony. The theme chosen for the 2025 celebrations is “Smiles for the New Year Celebration”.
The 2025 Angkor Sankranta event will highlight the rich cultural heritage, customs and achievements of Cambodia's ancestors, which will be showcased in a diverse exhibition over three days: April 14, 15 and 16, during the traditional Khmer New Year.
It is widely expected to attract both domestic and international tourists who will enjoy rich cultural and artistic displays, as well as numerous contemporary entertainment programmes.
Hong Vanak, an economist at the Royal Academy of Cambodia, told The Post that he believed the event in Siem Reap will showcase Cambodia's diverse cultural heritage to both domestic and international visitors, helping to promote the tourism sector more widely to the world.
Additionally, the event will serve as a driving force for economic activity, particularly in Siem Reap.
“The Angkor Sankranta event will bring numerous positive outcomes for the economy, with a large number of participants, both Cambodian and foreign. Their spending will lead to a significant cash flow into the national economy,” he said.
Lor Vichet, vice-president of the Cambodia-Chinese Commerce Association (CCCA), echoed his sentiments.
He explained that the Angkor Sankranta event serves to elevate Cambodian culture and traditions on the international stage. Organising this event aims to attract more domestic and international visitors to Siem Reap.
“The Angkor Sankranta event highlights the culture and traditions of our nation, while also promoting Siem Reap to both domestic and international visitors,” he said.
Sok Sabayna, executive director of the 2025 Angkor Sankranta event, addressed the media on March 9, following the official launch ceremony. He detailed the planned activities.
The event will be held at six locations, including the Angkor Wat temple complex, the Royal Gardens, Siem Reap River, King’s Road, Pub Street and Angkor-Gyeongju. The event will feature 38 major concerts and demonstrations.
The festival was first organised in 2013 by the Union of Youth Federations of Cambodia (UYFC).
