An inter-ministerial technical committee held their first meeting to draft the legal framework and policy, as well as strategies, for the management and development of electric vehicles (EVs) in Cambodia. They are also planning workshops to set out a roadmap for the construction of charging stations.

The committee, chaired by Minister of Public Works and Transport Sun Chanthol, met on March 24. Chanthol encouraged the committee members to endeavor to increase the number of charging stations that are available across the Kingdom.

“We have to find more ways and means to motivate people to purchase EVs. We can best do this by providing an environment that makes it possible for them to travel the length and breadth of the country in their EVs,” he was quoted as saying in a ministry social media post.

Chanthol said that Cambodia currently has 13 EV charging stations, with four of them at the public works ministry headquarters, six at private locations in Phnom Penh, and one each in Siem Reap, Preah Sihanouk and Battambang provinces.

A roadmap for an increase in EV charging stations is expected to be produced soon, with the support of UNDP Cambodia.
