‘The West Gate’, at Angkor Thom in 2008. McDermott first came to Siem Reap in 1995 to watch a solar eclipse above Angkor Wat, which he said inspired his signature use of infrared photography as he tried to recreate the effect.
Dubbed the “Ansel Adams of Angkor” by The New York Times, John McDermott took these photos of Angkor when there were few tourists. With the help of an ongoing Kickstarter campaign, which raised $50,000 in just three days, he plans to publish the second edition of his coffee table art book Elegy: Reflections on Angkor.
