The JTI Foundation, a charitable organization registered under Swiss law and financially endowed by JT International SA, is proud to contribute to Cambodian communities through various programs, particularly a project working in partnership with APOPO - Anti-Persoonsmijnen Ontmijnende Product Ontwikkeling (Anti-Personnel Landmines Removal Product Development), a Belgian NGO, using specially trained Mine Detection Rats (MDRs) – or “HeroRATs” to clear landmines in Cambodia. The project has contributed to the total landmine clearance of 1,230,477 m2 with 128 landmines and 95 explosive remnants of war removed, helping 6,276 farmers use the land for cultivation. The cleared land has resulted in increased crop production, rising household incomes, improved food security, improved access to public services, and a reduction in the number of people emigrating to find work elsewhere.

The JTI Foundation has provided financial support of over USD 1 million to APOPO since 2015, which is working in partnership with the Cambodia Mine Action Center (CMAC).

The project has been recognized by the Government of Cambodia as a key to effective poverty reduction in rural areas, and for helping contribute to the country’s overall development goals. It is also aligned with Cambodia’s commitment under the Ottawa Treaty to eliminate all landmines from the country by 2025.
