Japan is set to provide $754,321 to support physical education and cashew nut growers under The Grant Assistance for Japanese NGO Projects.
Two NGOs – Hearts of Gold and International Volunteers of Yamagata – have received $371,479 and $382,842 respectively to promote their grassroots projects.

HE Mikami Masahiro – Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Cambodia – and the two organisations signed an agreement on February 12 for the implementation of the projects.
One of the undertakings is a four-year project to develop physical education courses at Cambodia’s National Institute of Physical Education and Sport in Phnom Penh.
Hearts of Gold will assist the institute in developing physical education courses by improving the curriculum and the training teachers, as well as by installing physical education facilities.
Around 65 staff and 300 trainee teachers at the institute are expected to benefit from the improved learning environment for physical education.
The second project involves supporting smallholder farmers to grow organic cashew nuts through contract farming in Preah Vihear province.
International Volunteers of Yamagata will assist local growers to produce the organic cashew nuts and to also develop cooperative marketing to increase growers’ income, and improve their quality of life.
The Grant Assistance for Japanese NGO Projects was launched in Cambodia in 2002 to support activities to help the Kingdom’s reconstruction and development efforts at the grassroots level.
Japan has provided more than $42 million for 133 projects in Cambodia since 2002, mainly in the fields of primary education, healthcare, agriculture and mine clearance.
