28 years ago, on October 3rd, 1990, German reunification, following the fall of the Berlin Wall, marked the end of the long and painful division of our country.

Today, we look at a world in which new walls arise and social divides deepen. From our history we know: Walls are no solution, neither the ones made of concrete nor the ones in people’s minds.

It is the spirit of dialogue and openness that fosters progress, growth and prosperity. This, both Cambodia and Germany have learned from their recent history. Both countries have embraced international responsibility and a true commitment to multilateralism.

Economics tells us that openness works: The exchange of goods and services between our countries has reached the new high of two billion US dollars in 2017. There are now over 100,000 Germans visiting Cambodia every year.

For all Cambodians to benefit from the growing economy, Germany has supported the Royal Government in advancing rural development, public health, decentralization, and labor standards. With our support to the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia, to mine clearance and to civil society, we contribute to peace and reconciliation in the country.

The exchange of goods and services, of knowledge and resources, of culture and information has brought us this far.

Now, let us not be tempted by division and the creation of new walls. Let us deepen the relationship of our two countries and people.

As German Ambassador to the Kingdom of Cambodia, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all stakeholders who contribute towards this end.

Based on the principles of the 1991 Paris Peace Agreement, Germany, together with its European partners, remains committed to continue supporting Cambodia on its path towards democracy and prosperity.
