The US embassy in Phnom Penh has dubbed this year “AmCam 2022”, and pledged to lend a hand to Cambodia during its ASEAN chairmanship, with a focus on several key priorities.

It said the US is working together with the Kingdom on shared priorities including speeding the region’s economic recovery from the pandemic, addressing Mekong environmental challenges and tackling the climate crisis, and developing human capital.

“Throughout 2022, as Cambodia chairs ASEAN, we celebrate the enduring ties between the United States and the peoples of Southeast Asia,” said ambassador Patrick Murphy in a press statement on January 27.

According to the press release, the four "AmCam 2022" priorities are US investment in healthcare, wellbeing and economic prosperity of Cambodians and the peoples of ASEAN; US support for the aspirations of people across Southeast Asia for a more prosperous, democratic future.

The two other priorities are US leadership and partnership in recovering from the global pandemic and responding to climate change; and US engagement with the next generation of Southeast Asian leaders.

“We are closely partnered in this region and we will increase our engagement in 2022,” Murphy said.
