Two officials died in a road accident involving a car and truck on Tuesday morning along National Road 4 in Preah Sihanouk province’s Prey Nub district.

Y Sokha, provincial deputy police chief, said Prey Nub District Deputy Military Commander Chheng Sokny was driving a Camry sedan and escorting customs official Nhom Nov, who was in the passenger seat, to deposit money at the national treasury in the capital when the accident occurred.

Leading up to the accident, Sokny was speeding up to overtake a trailer and crashed into a truck in the opposite lane, killing Nov instantly and critically injuring Sokny.

Sokha said Sokny died at a local clinic in Prey Nub due to the severity of his injuries.

“The car of the officials was driving at a high speed, tried to overtake a trailer and collided with the truck in the other lane,” Sokha said.

The driver of the truck fled the scene of the crash, and local police took the money from Sokny’s car, safeguarding it at the district police station, according to a report from Preah Sihanouk police.
