A policeman was arrested on Friday and sent to the Phnom Penh Municipal Court for stealing a car and money last month in the capital’s Prek Eng commune, Chbar Ampov district, Phnom Penh Municipal Police chief Sar Thet said on Sunday.

Prey Veng provincial crime office head Ouk Phat said the 27-year-old suspect is an officer at the crime office in Prey Veng province “who just transferred from Banteay Meanchey”.

The suspect, after losing money while gambling at NagaWorld casino in Phnom Penh, rented the 33-year-old victim Puth Rithy’s car, a Toyota Highlander, in Prey Veng and then returned to the capital.

Upon reaching Phnom Penh, the suspect pointed a gun at the victim before fleeing with his car and some of his money.

The suspect drove the stolen car to the casino and asked a security guard to help sell it for $14,000.

According to the municipal police report, authorities arrested the suspect on November 27 at the Chaom Chao I commune of Por Sen Chey district, following a complaint filed by the victim on November 12.

Police also seized three rifles including two AK-47s.

Municipal court spokesman Kuch Kimlong said on Monday that the court was still questioning the suspect.
