The spectre of landmines and explosive remnants of war (ERWs) continue to threaten the lives of Cambodian citizens, with the latest casualty occurring today, April 23 in Oddar Meanchey province.

Early this morning, an exploding mine severely injured a tractor driver and completely destroyed his vehicle. The victim was identified as Hem Kao, a 24-year-old man who resides in Thlat commune’s Svay Chek village, in Anlong Veng district.

He was rushed to the Oddar Meanchey provincial referral hospital for treatment. The incident occurred while he was ploughing a field in O’Chik village, Ph’av commune, Trapaing Prasat district, according to demining authorities.

The authorities have continued to urge citizens to avoid entering areas with unclear histories and to consult local authorities before accessing such areas. They also advise against touching mines or unexploded ordnance and to immediately report any findings to competent authorities or nearby mine clearance operators for safe disposal.

Lang Kosal, spokesperson for the Cambodian Mine Action Authority (CMAA) told The Post that 17 people have fallen victim to mines and unexploded ordnance since the beginning of the year. Including today’s case, this represents a 24 per cent decrease from the 23 casualties which occurred during the same period in 2024.

Five of the victims were killed, while the remainder suffered injuries, including at least one amputation.

Seven of the incidents involved landmines, while ten were the result of UXO or ERWs.
