Minister of Justice Koeut Rith has called on the UN Asia and Far East Institute for the Prevention of Crime and the Treatment of Offenders (UNAFEI) to look into assisting Cambodia in the areas of criminal justice and law enforcement.

The request, regarding the Cambodian criminal justice system and including training and strengthening the capacity of law enforcement officials, came as the minister met with UNAFEI deputy director Junko Irie at the ministry headquarters on June 21.

The main focus of the meeting included community service sentencing in Cambodia and expanding the collaboration between the ministry and UNAFEI in the future.

At the meeting, Irie mentioned legal collaboration and asked Koeut Rith for his recommendations in principle regarding community service sentences in Cambodia.

In response, Koeut Rith requested that UNAFEI look into assisting the ministry, with the requested training of law enforcement officials coming in the areas of cybercrime and the forensic examination of evidence in criminal cases.

According to the ministry, the UNAFEI delegation would continue to meet with teams from the ministry to discuss in detail the collaboration between the ministry and UNAFEI regarding the criminal justice sector.
