Jailed former opposition leader Kem Sokha will appear before the Appeal Court tomorrow morning for a bail hearing and is being transported to Phnom Penh this evening, according to a court official.

The official, who asked to remain anonymous, said that Sokha will be kept at the Prison Judiciare overnight before appearing for a bail hearing at the Appeal Court tomorrow.

This would be the first time that Sokha will have left the Tbong Khmum prison he has been lodged at since he was whisked away during a midnight raid on his residence in Phnom Penh on September 3.

He has been provisionally charged for “treason” in relation to a 2013 video where he claimed to have got foreign assistance to plan his political trajectory.

“Kem Sokha will be brought to PJ prison this evening and will be brought to the Appeal Court on Thursday morning,” the anonymous source confirmed.

Meng Sopheary, a member of Sokha’s legal team, said his wife had informed her that Trapaing Thlong prison director Pin Yahn asked the former CNRP president “to get ready for joining the hearing tomorrow”.

Additionally, Sokha’s Facebook page also had a message saying he would appear before the court, with his daughter, Kem Monovithya, posting the same information on Twitter.
