Prime Minister Hun Sen called on ministries, institutions and relevant authorities to pay more attention to improving the welfare of the elderly.

In an October 1 letter observing the International Day of Older People, Hun Sen said that Cambodia has good traditions and is rich in cultural heritage and achievements.

The letter read that all of these legacies come from the merit and wise education of Cambodia's ancestors and elderly, whether they are “nobility, commoners, civil servants, soldiers, priests, laity, writers, linguists, economists, researchers, artists, lawyers or scientists”.

“In the practices of our society, the people not only have the practice of respecting the elderly, but also making this respect and gratitude of the elderly form the basis of virtues that create good culture and traditions for the next generation to continue the cause of defending and building their nation,” the letter added.

Hun Sen has called on all relevant institutions to pay more attention to supporting the wellbeing of the elderly and for everyone to visit and support the elderly, especially those with disabilities and those suffering from hardships.

“I would like to call on the Ministry of Social Affairs, Veterans and Youth Rehabilitation – and all committees and institutions at all levels – to increase their attention and support through all means to ensure the comfort of elderly people,” he said.
