Phnom Penh municipal governor Khuong Sreng has instructed the capital’s 14 districts to strictly enforce the government-imposed 14-day curfew without any exception in order to stem the coronavirus Delta variant.

Speaking during a virtual meeting with the district administrations on July 29, Sreng noted that the rate of Covid-19 transmission in Phnom Penh had dropped in the last two weeks but remained high in the provinces. Therefore, he said, prevented measures must be strictly enforced.

Anyone caught violating the curfew will be fined and their vehicles impounded as stated in the law on the control of Covid-19 and other contagious diseases.

“Previously, we made some exceptions by just stopping and educating offenders in less serious cases. But in implementing this latest directive, there is no more exception,” he said.

He said restaurants, smaller eateries and coffee shops, among others, can only accept takeaway orders.

Sreng ordered stricter enforcement in districts that border provinces.
