Former Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) activist Mai Hongsreang has been charged with "incitement to discriminate" and "incitement to commit a felony" by the Phnom Penh Municipal Court and sent to pre-trial detention.

“Prosecutor Riel Sophin has charged Mai Hongsreang and forwarded the case to the investigating judge. Hongsreang has been charged with incitement to discriminate and incitement to commit a felony,” court spokesperson Kuch Kimlong said on Thursday.

According to Article 296 of the Criminal Code, incitement to discriminate is punishable by one to three years in prison, with a fine of between two million and six million riel ($500-$1,500).

Incitement to commit a felony under Article 495 carries a maximum jail term of two years and a fine of four million riel.

Hongsreang was arrested in the capital by Anti-cybercrime Department police on Tuesday night for allegedly insulting government leaders by altering their photos.

The CNRP condemned his arrest and called on authorities to release the activist.
