A farmer in Rukhak Kiri district of Battambang province found 47 Soviet Union-made landmines on June 9 while he was looking after his cows, according to the National Police.

The police said the landmines found are the type PN2 with a cross sign on each of them, all made in the now-dissolved Soviet Union. They were found by farmer Hem Sophal in Prek Chik village of Prek Chik commune.

After Sophal called and reported what he had found, local police went to inspect the site and they then reported it to the Cambodian Mine Action Centre (CMAC), who will deal with the disposal of the landmines.

Police thanked the farmer for reporting his find without delay and they called on all people in the village to be mindful of the possibility of encountering unexploded ordnance to avoid putting their lives in danger.
