The Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC), commonly known as the Khmer Rouge Tribunal, will convene a four-day appeal hearing concerning former Khmer Rouge head of state Khieu Samphan, as his case is expected to finish next year.
The ECCC Supreme Court Chamber will hear case 002/02 against Samphan, 91, from August 16-19 and keep August 20-27 as reserve dates if the hearing needs to be extended.

Samphan was convicted by the ECCC Trial Chamber for crimes against humanity, war crimes and genocide against the ethnic Vietnamese. He was sentenced to life in prison in 2018 but has since appealed to the Supreme Court Chamber.
ECCC spokesman Neth Pheaktra said on August 12 that Samphan was in good health and would attend the hearing with his lawyers.
“Following the hearing, the Supreme Court Chamber is expected to announce its final decision in the fourth quarter of 2022,” he said.
Samphan is the only former Khmer Rouge leader in custody.
However, Pheaktra said the tribunal still has some other cases it is working on and the ECCC will not end next year.
“The remainder of our work concerns those cases, work related to the legacy of the courts and management of documents,” he said.
Due to Covid-19, the hearing permits only 50 people in the public gallery – 10 for civil parties, 15 for diplomats and government representatives, 15 for the media and 10 for the public.
