SayKhmer, a small, informal group of young Cambodian student teachers, has launched a new program of Khmer language lessons at Cour de Maison cafe, along with fun, off-the-beaten-track tours around Siem Reap.

Having evolved organically, as a means of developing their teaching skills, the group is being coordinated by British photographer, Michael Carroll, who facilitates the lessons between the student teachers and expats and tourists at the charming coffee shop off Wat Bo Road.

“It stemmed from me initially having lessons and receiving repeated requests from friends and acquaintances to have lessons as well,” explained Carroll, who says he does his best to facilitate and grow SayKhmer to meet demand.

Carroll said the idea is simply to informally teach people Khmer, which will enhance people’s time in Cambodia by better immersing them in the culture, while providing some work and experience to young teachers.
